How to Reduce Road Noise in a Truck?

Truck drivers experience power and utility together with freedom but must deal with the widespread problem of road noise in their vehicles. Noise generated by tire contact with unsmooth pavement and windy door drafts along with engine vibrations transforms an enjoyable journey into an unpleasant situation. Sound blocking beyond comfort purposes creates superior focus along with better music quality and reduced driver fatigue particularly during extended driving periods.

Complete soundproofing systems exist to decrease truck road noise through the use of quality soundproofing materials. Choosing correct products to apply at certain areas will lead to the transformation of your cabin into a quieter environment for enhanced enjoyment.

What Causes Road Noise in Trucks?

The first necessary step for fixing road noise requires understanding its origin points. In trucks, common sources include:

  • Tires and wheel wells: These areas pick up and transfer road vibrations and gravel impacts directly into the cabin.

  • Engine and transmission: Low-frequency hums and vibrations often leak into the interior from the engine bay and underbody.

  • Doors and windows: Weak seals and metal panels allow wind and outside sounds to intrude.

  • Truck bed and cabin panels: Large, untreated metal surfaces amplify vibration and act like drums.

  • Roof and floor: These surfaces are prone to echo and vibrational noise, especially at highway speeds.

All these elements combine to create a noisy environment. Thankfully, specialized soundproofing materials offer a clear solution.

Apply Sound Deadening Mats to Key Areas

Installing sound deadening mats is one of the most effective road noise reduction steps. These dense, adhesive backed materials consume and neutralize vibrations and noise due to road contact or resulting from engine activity. Trucker sound deadening mats are available from brands like SoundSkins Global which customize their products to offer the best of premium sound deadening mats and will fit a truck perfectly, as well as offering reliable performance.

Where to Apply?

  • Doors: Treating the inner metal of the door panels helps block outside noise and eliminates panel rattling.

  • Floor: Applying mats under the carpet significantly reduces road vibration and low-frequency hum.

  • Roof: The roof often transfers wind noise and rain impact into the cabin; dampening material softens those effects.

  • Back wall (behind the seats): Particularly in pickups, this area benefits from added insulation to reduce rear road noise.

  • Truck bed: Placing soundproof materials underneath or inside the truck bed stops metal noises from entering the interior.

Seal Air Leaks Around Doors and Windows

Airborne sound often finds its way in through small gaps in window seals and door edges. Worn-out weather-stripping can allow wind and tire noise to pass through easily. Replacing or reinforcing these seals makes a noticeable difference.

Use rubber or foam seals to close gaps and improve the cabin’s insulation. Combine this approach with a layer of SoundSkins sound deadening material inside the doors for maximum results. The dual barrier of the physical seal and dampening pad drastically cuts external intrusion.

Add Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) for Maximum Noise Blocking

Mass Loaded Vinyl is a flexible yet dense material used to block airborne sound. It’s often layered over sound deadening mats to add a second level of noise control. MLV is perfect for:

  • Floor and under-seat areas: Where road and exhaust noise tend to build.

  • Cabin bulkhead: Adding a sheet of MLV behind the seats helps block rear wheel and road noise.

  • Firewall: Lining the cabin side of the firewall with MLV stops engine noise before it enters the cabin.

SoundSkins Pro Kits often include a combination of dampening and insulation materials, streamlining the process with everything needed for full coverage.

Install Acoustic Foams in Strategic Areas

For truck owners who want a studio-like silence, acoustic foam can help absorb higher-frequency sounds that other materials miss. These foams are excellent for areas such as:

  • Inside door panels

  • Behind plastic trim

  • Under the dashboard

If you combine tightly woven dense deadening mats with the appropriately chosen acoustic foam, you’ll quiet the space more, exploring more ways to tackle more frequencies of noise inside your truck.

Reduce Road Noise from the Truck Bed

The open area of pickup trucks functions as an acoustic sound enhancer through the bed area. Road vibrations produce echoes from large metal surfaces that send vibrations into the cab space to a greater extent when the truck bed is without cargo. Deadening sheets from SoundSkins provide effective soundproofing of truck bed interior to minimize its impact on noise levels.

Apply the material underneath the bed or inside the bed walls if possible. This not only improves cabin quietness but also helps protect cargo from shifting noise and vibration.

Improve Audio Quality with Better Soundproofing

A quieter truck environment enables better audio performance benefits to appear. Noisy surroundings make it impossible to hear music details or acoustic instruments because of excessive noise.

When road noise is controlled?

  • Bass sounds tighter and more defined.

  • Midrange becomes clearer, making vocals and instruments stand out.

  • Volume can be reduced, which is better for long-term hearing.

SoundSkins speaker rings and door kits help isolate and contain speaker output, directing more sound into the cabin and less into the door cavity. This means cleaner sound without increasing volume levels.

Use Layered Soundproofing for Best Results

Single type of material cannot effectively reduce all sorts of noise. For effective road noise reduction, consider a layered approach:

  1. Start with sound deadening mats (like SoundSkins) to absorb vibration and structure-borne noise.

  2. Add insulation or acoustic foam to soften airborne sound.

  3. Top with MLV or barrier layers to block any remaining external noise.

This method ensures your truck has both absorption and reflection capabilities, handling different frequencies effectively.

Focus on High-Traffic Noise Zones

Not all areas of your truck need the same treatment. Focus first on sections where noise enters most:

  • Front wheel wells: These transmit the most road vibration into the floor and firewall.

  • Driver and passenger doors: Frequent culprits for wind and traffic noise.

  • Roof: Amplifies rain and wind noise.

  • Rear wall and bed: Especially relevant in pickups and extended cabs.

By treating these zones first with reliable products from SoundSkins Global, you can enjoy significant noise reduction even without doing a full-cabin treatment right away.

Professional Installation vs. DIY: What’s Better?

Soundproofing your truck can be done on your own if you have the tools, time, and patience. Many of SoundSkins’ kits are designed for easy installation with peel-and-stick adhesive backing and vehicle-specific templates.

However, if you’re not confident removing panels or cutting material accurately, a professional installer can ensure optimal coverage with minimal waste. The investment pays off in terms of time saved and performance achieved.

Final Thoughts

Road noise is a part of driving a truck, but doesn’t have to take up your driving experience. However, if you combine the use of the above key components of sound deadening, sealing, and acoustic treatment you can reduce the amount of unwanted noise considerably and have a more peaceful ride. A quieter cabin means you can feel better, listen better, think better and less fatigue if you are on a long haul trip or commuting across town.

For those who are serious about the sound shielding, reducing road noise, transforming the truck into a sound controlled chamber, their products are a competent place to start.

Step 1

To install the material you need be working on the metal surface of the car, remove upholstery. If you have never done this, we suggest searching it up on YouTube. Once the upholstery is removed, make sure there is no debris, waxy oils or rust by cleaning the surface with denatured alcohol.

Step 2

Once surface is clean and ready to go, cut the sound deadening material to the right size so it fits desired area. For small surfaces, we recommend that you measure the dimensions and then cut to fit.

Step 3

With the surface area clean and pieces cut to desired dimensions, peel off the paper and apply material to surface area starting from the top to bottom using the car door holes to help with alignment. We recommend using a hand roller to ensure that there are no air pockets and ensure the adhesiveness.

Sound Deadener Install FAQ: Tips & Tricks

What tools will I need to for a sound deadening project?
  • Rag & Denatured Alcohol: Apply the alcohol to the rag and use to clean the metal surface areas you will be applying the material to.
  • Gloves: Our product is pretty safe to install without gloves but if you have never installed a sound deadener mat, we recommend using gloves.
  • Hand roller: We highly recommend using a small roller to reach the tighter surface areas of your vehicle. You can find these on Amazon or most online retail shops. There are wooden, rubber and metal rollers, we recommend wooden or rubber, try and stay away from metal as they can tear the material.
  • Utility Knife: The utility blade is to cut the material. Make sure to cut the material on top of a pice of cardboard so that your blade stays sharper longer, if it's a big job, have some extra blades around.
How do you apply sound deadener material?

We sell our roll on sound deadener product in 2 different formats: custom cut to fit pro kits and an easy to work with rolled up large sheet. If you can measure, cut, peel and stick you can install sound deadener! You can use your hand to apply pressure when positioning the material and then use a roller to make sure it sticks down to metal surface.

After you cut the material and are ready to stick it on, some customers find it easier to peel off a small portion of the release liner and then apply it to metal surface, and then work their way across the sheet, peeling off a small section at a time.

Make sure to always remove the air bubbles with the roller. The second most important thing when it comes to quality of sound deadener is the quality of adhesion to the surface area. You want the material to be stuck down properly to ensure it stays in place.

Where do you apply the sound deadening material?

The great thing about our sound deadening material is that it can be applied to all types of metal surfaces. All SoundSkins sheets use extremely strong adhesive and they can even be mounted on fiberglass, plastic and even wooden surfaces, but it's not very common to apply to these surfaces since they don't vibrate as much. By covering all metal surfaces such as your doors, roof, trunk and floor you can make a significant difference to unwanted road noise.

Your top priority when applying a car sound deadener is to cover the doors, floor and trunk. If you have extra material then proceed to other metal surfaces you wish to cover for extra sound insulation.

How much surface area should I cover?

To properly deaden the metal surfaces, we recommend to at least do 25% coverage with our SoundSkins material, this will make a difference in unwanted road noise, but to have a huge impact we recommend covering up 60% of metal surfaces. If you want to get the most used from your sheet, one effective strategy is the CHECKER BOARD APPROACH, using this technique you cut the SoundSkins sheet into small pieces and apply them to the metal surface in a checkered pattern.

It is very common for our customers to do close to 100& coverage to any metal surface because not only are they looking to reduce road noise, they also want to insulate their car from heat or they like the way the material looks on the car's bare metal surface.

How do I make sure the sound deadener sticks well?

SoundSkins products are made with a very strong adhesive and create a extremely strong bond with the metal, it's really hard to NOT make it stick. To ensure the best possible bond, we highly recommend cleaning the metal surface before applying our material and then using a hand roller to firmly attach the SoundSkins deadening mats.

Great adhesion with no air bubbles is the absolute key if you want to get the best performance. Remember that any air pocket with poor adhesion means you will not get the full benefit of the deadener.

How to install car sound deadener: Recap
  1. Remove upholstery and carpet from your vehicle. Proceed to vacuum to get rid of debris and dirt. Clean all greasy spots with denatured alcohol, other solvents or degreasers will leave behind a film that prevents a solid contact surface. Allow metal surface to try.
  2. Cut the SoundSkins sheet to desired size and cut using a sharp utility knife. Use gloves to avoid any cuts.
  3. Peel off the wax paper from the back of material and apply to surface, this can be done by small sections at a time. Use roller to create a strong bond between material and metal surface and to get rid of any air bubbles.
