The SoundSkins Classic Black is a bulk roll of pure rubber butyl sound deadener with a diamond-embossed black foil face. You get 38.75 sq ft on one continuous 23.6" x 236" sheet, enough to treat the doors, floor and trunk of most cars, or a big part of a van build. It is made to do one job extremely well: stop sheet metal from vibrating, which cuts rattles, road drone and resonance. The stealth black finish looks clean anywhere it can be seen, and at about $5 per square foot it is the most cost-effective way to deaden a large area.

Classic or Pro: Which Do You Need?

SoundSkins makes two types of deadener. They solve different parts of the noise problem:

Choose Classic if you want the most coverage for the money, need a thin material for tight gaps, or plan to add your own foam layer. Choose Pro if you want vibration damping and foam in one step.

Why Pure Butyl Matters

Cheap deadeners often use asphalt or butyl mixed with filler. They can smell in the heat, sag off panels and lose their grip over time. SoundSkins Classic is pure rubber butyl with no second-hand fillers, so it stays flexible, sticks hard to the metal and keeps working in summer heat. It is also easy to work with: it cuts cleanly and stays put when you roll it down.

Diamond-Embossed Black Foil

  • Stiffer surface: The embossed pattern stiffens the foil, which helps the butyl damp vibration more effectively.
  • Easy to see full contact: The pattern flattens as you roll the material down, so you can tell when every part is bonded to the panel.
  • Stealth finish: Black foil disappears behind speaker grilles, in open trunks and on exposed van walls, where silver foil would stand out.

Where to Use It

How Much Do You Need?

You don't need 100% coverage to stop vibration. Covering about 25% to 50% of the center of each panel is usually enough to stop it ringing. That means one 38.75 sq ft roll goes further than you might expect. Use the coverage calculator on this page to estimate your vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SoundSkins Classic the same as SoundSkins Pro?

No. Classic is a 2-layer butyl and foil deadener for stopping panel vibration. Pro adds a closed-cell foam layer for airborne noise and rattles. Classic costs less per square foot and is thinner.

Can I use it in a van build?

Yes. Its large roll size is ideal for van side walls, roofs and wheel arches. Many van builders add an insulation or foam layer on top for heat and airborne noise.

Is the roll or the sheets version better?

They are the same material and coverage. The roll lets you cut large pieces for floors and van walls with fewer seams. The sheets are easier to handle for doors and smaller panels.

Does it smell in hot weather?

Classic is pure rubber butyl, not asphalt, and contains no fillers. Asphalt-based mats are the ones known for smelling in the heat.

Why is the foil black?

The stealth black foil looks clean in visible areas like open trunks, show builds and van interiors, where silver foil can look unfinished.

Great quality sound-wrap. The non-sticky side has an aluminum foil type backing which is nice for durability. I've only done my front two doors (2005 Saab 92x Aero aka Saaburu) but it's made a big difference in the road noise level. I can listen to podcasts much more easily now, which is why bought it.
