How to Stop Sunroof Rattle and Wind Buffeting in Your Car
Most people lump these two complaints together, and that is exactly why so many attempted fixes go nowhere. A rattle and a buffet are different problems with different causes. One is a mechanical issue happening inside your roof, the other is an aerodynamic pressure effect happening outside it. Treat them as the same thing and you will end up greasing seals that were never the problem.
So before touching anything, sort your noise into one of two buckets.
Rattle, creak, or click happens over bumps, at low speed, or even when parked with the engine running. It sounds like plastic on plastic or metal tapping metal. The sunroof is usually closed when you hear it.
Buffeting only happens when the roof is open at speed. It is that deep, pulsing thump that pressurises your ears and makes conversation impossible. Some people describe it as a helicopter sound. It is not a fault at all, which is why no repair shop can fix it.
Why Buffeting Happens and How to Kill It
That throbbing is Helmholtz resonance, the same physics as blowing across the top of a bottle. Your cabin becomes the bottle and the sunroof opening becomes the neck. Tracking Down a Sunroof Rattle
Rattles are harder because the assembly sits behind a headliner, so you cannot see what is moving. The trick is to narrow the location before you take anything apart.
Drive a road you know produces the noise. Have a passenger press firmly on different areas: the headliner around the roof opening, each corner of the glass, the sunshade panel, the grab handles, the overhead console. The Fixes, Cheapest First
Lubricate the seals. Dry rubber sticking to glass is the single most common source of sunroof creaking noise. Clean the rubber gasket around the glass panel with a damp cloth, let it dry, then apply a silicone-based rubber conditioner or a dielectric-safe seal lubricant. Do not use petroleum grease, which degrades rubber over time. Also run a light lubricant along the guide rails, accessible by opening the roof fully.
Cycle the roof correctly. If your panel has been closed for months, tilt it first before sliding it. Sliding a stuck panel puts load on the rails and cables and is a known way to develop long-term rattles and misalignment.

When they clog with pollen and leaves, water backs up into the headliner. Pour a small amount of water into the channel and watch it drain.
